IN AN EFFORT TO HELP FIND ABDUCTED CHILDREN, LOCAL COMPANY CREATES AMBER ALERT NET TO REACH COLORADO INTERNET USERS

- Webroot Software Continues to Protect Children Online Through the Creation of AMBER Alert Net -

Boulder, CO, October 28, 2002 - Webroot Software, a Boulder-based company that provides privacy and protection software to household and small business Internet users, today introduced AMBER Alert Net, a free software program that will help transmit information about local child abductions from the AMBER Alert system to Colorado Internet users. A natural extension of its existing products that help protect children on the Internet, Webroot designed AMBER Alert Net as a free, public service available to all Internet users with no subscription fee or product purchase attached.

Webroot has worked in cooperation with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations (CBI) as well as the Colorado Broadcasters Association (CBA) in designing the service. “I like the concept behind Webroot and how it provides another means of informing the public of the Amber Alerts,” said Mark Wilson, Agent in Charge at CBI. “It's designed to provide Amber Alerts to the entire Internet population.”

Since child abductions often happen before and after school, during workday hours, AMBER Alert Net is specifically designed to reach those Colorado adults that are connected to the Internet at their business office or at home and are not watching TV or listening to the radio during this time period. Internet users can download Amber Alert Net from http://www.amberalertnet.com or the following participating media Web sites; KOA-AM (http://www.850koa.com), The Denver Post (http://www.denverpost.com), and KNRC - AM http://www.knrcradio.com.

“We're a Colorado-based company that has been fortunate enough to succeed in this very tough economic environment. We felt it was our responsibility to use our technology to give back to the community,” said David Moll, CEO of Webroot Software. “As parents, brothers and sisters our team wanted to extend our technology to allow all Colorado Internet users to actively participate in the safe recovery of an abducted child. AMBER Alert Net is a small and simple application that takes users two minutes to download. With very little effort, participants can become part of the solution to find abducted children.”

Colorado adopted the AMBER Alert Plan in April of this year. Since the original AMBER Plan was established, 71 modified versions have been adopted at local, regional, and statewide levels. Twenty-seven states have a statewide plan. To date the AMBER Plan has been credited with recovering 35 children across the U.S.

About AMBER Alert Plan
The AMBER Plan is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases.

Broadcasters use the Emergency Alert System (EAS), formerly called the Emergency Broadcast System, to air a description of the abducted child and suspected abductor.

This is the same concept used during severe weather emergencies. The goal of the AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe return of the child.
